RAS NEWSFLASH

Update about the Claremont Library, Lecture reminder, and other news.

Dear RAS member,

Claremont Library

Following concerns expressed by many members, please find attached a letter from Kirsty McHugh, the Collections Manager, giving an update on the transfer of the library to the Brotherton.

Catterick Archaeology Day

All members who tried to get there will be aware that the planned “Archaeology Day” at the A1 widening scheme at Catterick Bridge last Saturday was cancelled due to an explosion at Marne barracks and subsequent closure of the A1. It is hoped to arrange an alternative day soon, and I will of course let members know of any developments.

Villa Excavation

Some members will already be aware of a current excavation of a Roman villa site near Bedale, and that I was hoping to arrange a site visit for RAS members very soon. I have spoken to the archaeological consultants today and I gather that the timeframe has now been extended, and that it is unlikely that a visit can now be arranged before Christmas. I will advise members as soon as I have arranged a date

Latest Lecture in the Thornton le Street Roman Roads series

John Brown will give the final lecture in the series on Saturday 13th December in Thornton le Street Village Hall at 2.00pm, entitled “The Enigmatic Tees Crossing”. John will give some details of his team’s work where the so-called Cade’s Road crosses the Tees, including the discovery of a marching camp and other very interesting features. Full details are attached.

RAS Lecture Reminder

I have also attached minutes of the previous meeting, along with the agenda for the next meeting which will be held on Saturday 17th January, Claremont, 17th January, preceded at 2.00pm by the next lecture in our 2014-15 series.
