Excavation in 1863 uncovered Roman building remains, wall plaster, a tessellated pavement (4th C), tiles and pottery. The finds have been interpreted as indicating the site of a Roman villa. Its relationship to the villa site some 400m away is not known, and so it remains possible that they were part of the same estate or settlement.
