Danby Ironstone Workings
Roman Yorkshire Map (Industrial) Enlarge

Situated some 300 metres beyond the northern cross dyke on Danby Rigg, on the eastern side of the plateau, there is a heap of iron slag surrounded by shallow pits dug to extract iron ore-bearing stone. This area also includes the buried remains of one or more bloomeries, small furnaces for smelting iron which were used from the Iron Age through to the medieval period. Scheduled.
